Smoke from wildfires has caused poor air quality in major Canadian cities, including Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, Environment Canada said on Friday.
Environment Canada issued special air quality statements for these cities and their surrounding areas on Friday, warning that people most likely to suffer health effects from air pollution should avoid strenuous activities outdoors and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.
According to the air quality health index released by Environment Canada, the health risk level in Ottawa has reached the "very high risk" category. All outdoor activities in the capital have been canceled.
David Phillips, an expert from Environment Canada, said that as wildfires ramp up across the country, air quality is deteriorating.
The wildfire season in Canada typically runs from May to September each year. According to the latest data from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center, there are currently 215 active wildfires across the country, with over 100 of them being out of control.
